Couple Arrested For Growing Wee

Man and Wife, Kwame Adu and Margret Kobi with some of the suspected Wee, found in their room

A DAWN SWOOP on Saturday by the police has led to the arrest of a man and his wife who allegedly cultivated Indian hemp on a three-acre land at Esaase near Lake Bosomtwe in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects were identified as Kwame Adu, 39, and Margaret Kobi, 29, who live in a wooden structure at Esaase along the banks of Lake Bosomtwe with their five children.

The police found quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, also known as wee, which were packed in sacks and cement bags and a locally made gun hidden in the room of the suspects.

Their arrest formed part of a special exercise dubbed ‘Operation Trace the Roots’, a brainchild of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) of the Ashanti Regional Police Command to stop wee cultivation in the region.

The couple, the police said, is among the major suppliers of Indian hemp to dealers and users at the scattered ghettos in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.

Interestingly, the man and his wife still looked adamant even under arrest. They led armed policemen and a group of journalists to a tall mountain under the pretext of showing their wee farm to them, but it turned out to be a hoax.

ASP Jeremiah Alele, Head of DLEU, who led the operation which saw the police and journalists walking for about five miles to Esaase, later managed to locate the wee farm by himself.

He told newsmen that the police were also on the heels of other suspected producers of wee at Esaase whose names were only given as Collins and James.

According to him, the three-acre land being used to cultivate wee by the couple and others yet to be identified would soon be set on fire by the police, promising that his unit would do everything possible to eradicate wee production in the region.

ASP Alele said the DLEU has realised that the sale and usage of wee in the region could be minimised greatly if those who use huge tracts of land to cultivate the illegal substance are arrested.
