2014 NATIONAL BEST FARMER LAMENTS THE PLIGHT OF FARMERS

The 2014 national best farmer Mr. George Asamoah has told the sorry story of how farmers in our villages are suffering due to the actions and inactions of the government towards the agricultural sector and the farmers involved.

In an interview with the Rite Morning Ride on Rite FM, he said the government was rather concentrating on non-farming communities for developmental projects other than farming while leaving the farming communities to their fate. He noted that though the government was doing its best, its efforts towards agricultural development was not satisfactory.

He said farmers passed through a lot of difficulties to cultivate and harvest their farm produce but faced a lot of challenges on the transportation of their produce to the market centers due to the bad nature of the roads connecting farming communities and the various market places.

He added that cutlasses, wellington boots, fertilizers and other farming amenities were very expensive which is not affordable by the farmers.

He further stated that farmers paid taxes to the government so it was the responsibility of the government to provide good roads and other social amenities to them. He said the government should play its effective roles to prevent their farm produce from perishing in their farmers due to the bad road network.

He later appealed to the government to put measures in place to make farming more attractive for the youth to involve themselves in the agricultural sector to reduce unemployment in the country.
