Pig Farmers Urged To Ensure Proper Raising Of Pigs

By Austin Ofori Addo:

National Best Pig Farmer for the year 2010, Madam Mariam Tetteh Larnor who runs the Gesmatella Farms near Akuse in the Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region has called on pig farmers to do all in their power to ensure the proper raising of their pigs.

Madam Larnor who was speaking on Rite FM’s Agric Forum with Krobea Asante on Saturday noted it took a lot to engage in pig rearing and that it was capital intensive. This arises of the fact, she explained, that to confine the animals one needs to put up a structure properly designed for the purpose of rearing the pigs. This according to her involves either blocks or a wooden structure.

Madam Larnor, explains that the need to put up the right housing structure for the pigs stems from the fact that they are very destructive.

Regarding their feeding, she strongly urged pig farmers to provide quality food for the animals to ensure their proper growth. According to her, preparing their food with their right feed provides them with the right nutrients to grow well.

For her, rearing the pigs on the free range system is not advisable as pigs raised through that system resulted in them gaining a lot of fat which results in fatty pork.

She therefore called on pig farmers to ensure that their animals are fed the right feed in order to yield healthy pigs.
