We won’t allow illiterates to drive – DVLA tells irate drivers

The Director for Driver Training, Testing and Licensing at the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA), Cheyuo Wiena Musah, has said driving is a privilege and illiterates have no business engaging in it.

Some commercial drivers have been agitating against a policy by the authority which they claim makes it extremely difficult to obtain a driving license.

The commercial drivers, led by the Committed Drivers Association Monday embarked on a strike which left hundreds of commuters stranded in Accra.

The drivers also object to a newly introduced electronic road worthiness sticker, compulsory driving course and the compulsory installation of seat belts in commercial vehicles.

Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, Mr. Musah said the DVLA cannot watch on whiles illiterates ply the roads and put the lives of Ghanaians in danger.

“We began telling all Ghanaians that from 2007, if you have not gone to school, you can no longer continue driving as has been in the past; we are not saying those without certificate. If you cannot read and write, we are sorry, driving is a privilege; you can’t get a driving license; it’s simple,” he stated.
