Four chiefs in the North Tongu District in the Volta Region have expressed their disappointment at the government’s failure to fulfil its promise of bringing development to their communities.
Among their concerns are failure of the government to complete abandoned projects, rehabilitate bad roads, the closure of the Sokpekofe Milk Factory, the deteriorating state of Volta Star Textile Limited (VSTL) and the creation of a new district.
The chiefs of Dorfor, Volo, Torgorme and Fodzoku have subsequently asked the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, to urgently facilitate a meeting with the President to enable them to pour out their frustrations about the lack of development in their communities.
The Chief of Podoe-Dofor and the President of the Dofor Traditional area, Togbe Adela Titriku Anaze XII, who spoke on behalf of the chiefs, said the government had failed to fulfil its promise to them.
At a grand durbar to celebrate the Youth Festival of the four areas, Togbe Anaze XII stated that there were pressing needs of the communities, which had to be brought to the attention of the President to be addressed.
Collapse of Textile Factory
Togbe Anaze XII mentioned that the textile company which served as a livelihood for the people was collapsing, while the milk factory had been closed down, thereby depriving livestock farmers of revenue to sustain their farms.
He called on the government to take immediate steps to support the management of the textile factory to prevent it from collapsing and also open the milk factory for the farmers.
He recalled that during the 2012 presidential election campaign, President Mahama promised to create a district with its capital at Juapong, but till date nothing has being said about that.
‘We, the chiefs, do not want to be seen talking too much but again we would like to remind the government that a promise to the people is an indebtedness to the people,” he indicated.
Togbe Anaze XII, however, thanked the government for extending electricity to the towns and villages in the traditional areas and also constructing two day senior high schools at Volo and Dofor.
The MP for North Tongu, Mr Okudjeto Ablakwa, calmed the nerves of the people and gave an assurance that the textile factory will not collapse because the government was making efforts to get credible investors to help revive it.
He also stated that the contract for the road from Juapong to Volo had been awarded and by the first quarter of the 2016, the road would been constructed.
