Refuse Takes Over Kpong Fishing Harbor!- Fisherfolk Cry For Help.

The residents of the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality are worried about the rate at which refuse has taken over the Kpong Fishing habour, and are calling on the authorities to act as fast as they can to prevent the outbreak and spread of communicable diseases such as cholera.

The situation according to the residents has continued due to the lack of proper dumping sites in the municipality and also blamed the sanitation inspectors for not delivering on their duties as expected.

According to the residents who spoke to Rite News, things will normalize when the assembly and the traditional council come together to enact bye-laws to curtail the poor sanitation situation in the at the shore.
‘’All we need are bye laws that will deal with people who dump indiscriminately to serve as a deterrent to others. And this can only be done through the effort of both the assembly and the traditional council since they have the power, we believe their effort will yield more fruit ’’ they said

According to the fisher folks who spoke to Rite News, aquatic weeds have taken over the Volta Lake because the situation at hand has made it very conducive for its growth therefore affecting their day catch.
The fishmongers could not also hide the challenges the refuse poses on the daily activities therefore called for help.“We are suffering, the refuse is collapsing our business since our customers always complain of the environment but what can we do, its beyond us it is the work of the assembly so the MCE should hear our cry” they appealed.

Meanwhile the Municipal Chief Executive of Lower Manya Hon Simon Kwaku Tetteh said his outfit is aware so measures are in place to curtail the situation to improve sanitation of the area but also called on them to desist from dumping refuse in the area.
He said there will be a task force to monitor and arrest those who will not adhere to the warning bell.
