Extension of Free SHS to NVTI Institution Can Help Reduce Unemployment

Executive Director of National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Mawusi Nudekor Awity, has lauded government’s announcement to include technical schools on the free SHS policy, and it’s a good move to reduce the rate of unemployment in the country.
According to her, it was an initiative that will be absolutely embraced by the schools, as more students can be released from the burden of supporting themselves.
“Unemployment situation, especially among the youth is becoming increasingly alarming. Among the trainers, however, this can be curbed by providing start-up capitals for them to start their own businesses, or to expand already established ones to meet social demands,” she said.
Speaking to Rite Morning Ride host, Austin Ofori, Mawusi Nudekor Awity said, the government is pushing a lot of resources into technical and vocational education in Ghana and needs to be recommended.
“The president of the republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo is doing well; supporting and awarding scholarships to number of NVIT students across the country, which is a step in the country” she said.
She asked Ghanaians to support the government to push technical and vocational education since it’s the only way to better position Ghana.
“We have to support the president and must all play a role, parents must encourage their wards to equip themselves well through the technical and vocational education.”
“Parents must not see children who are into technical and vocational institutions as blocked headed people, they are rather the most intelligent people on earth and needs to be appreciated,” she added
In an NVTI 2012 study on employability status, Madam Awity noted that about 53% of graduates from the NVTI are either self-employed or are wage employment.
She was positive that, “if our trainers are given the necessary assistance and put in a position to expand their business, it is our hope that they will help bridge the unemployment gap.”
She asserted, “from the stuff displayed,” that “it is obvious that our trainers have the ability to help in the country’s development and with the introduction of the free SHS, more students can now enroll to receive training in various fields to support in nation-building.”
