Chiefs Turn To Fishing In Kwahu

By: Krobea  Asante Tofepa – Ntomentwene

Four chiefs, Nana Asiedu Kwabeng (Akyeamehene), Nana Adomako Baah (Sanaahene), Nana Awuah Basoa (Nkosoohene), Nana Ntim Sampong (Ankaasehene also Banmuhene) and three others, Agya Koo, Kofi Sapate and Yaw Darko have become the subject of talk following their fishing from the Akasu river at Kwahu Abene, which is the only alternative source of drinking water for the people of Abene, Nkantanan and many other surrounding communities during harmattan when most water bodies are dried up.

Addressing inhabitants of Abene community at a press conference, Mr. Dickson Kwadwo Boateng reiterated that on the 16th day of December last year, the aforementioned chiefs and accomplices were seen with a pumping machine and water hose drawing all water from Akasu to make it possible for them to conduct their fishing agenda.

In a statement, Mr. Boateng said that the situation had compelled many to evacuate their homes for Nkawkaw and other neighboring towns since water to cook, wash and accomplish other household chores had become a burden.

“We officially informed the Abetifi police to take action against the chiefs and the other people involved but for three weeks now, little or nothing has been executed to bring them to book,” he added.

Therefore a one week ultimatum has been issued to the police to take steps to address the issue and if the situation remains same, irate members of Abene community will have no option than to express their wrath through a demonstration which according to them, not even the Inspector General of Police would be able to quell. This is because, according to them the chiefs ought to set good examples worth emulation, a native noted.

In another development, Mr. Boateng revealed that the chiefs involved in the act were the very same people who dragged a former assembly man to the traditional council for fishing in the same Akusu River.

“We are ready to set records straight and no wrongdoing will be shielded,” Mr. Boateng stressed, while adding that the Police should act swiftly to avoid any unforeseen and unpredicted violence emanating from a matter which needed much attention.
