A Divisional Chief in the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area, in the Eastern Region, is collaborating with the people of the Pleyo community in the Yilo Krobo municipality to build a new classroom for the primary school in the area.
Nene Teye Agor IV, Divisional Chief for Okper division, who was urging citizens to revive the spirit of communal labour to facilitate the progress of their communities, has pledged to donate bags of cement and iron rod for the construction of the Pleyo MA Primary School and also called on artisans including masons, carpenters and steel benders to come on board to build the edifice for the school.
“We cannot wait for the government every day to do it because I believe if we the people in the community come together we can help build another school for the students,” Nene Teye said.
“We can start through communal labor so when we are stuck then we call on the government for assistant or support,” he added.
He made this commitment during a move to reward well-deserving pupils of some selected primary schools in the Yilo Krobo municipality.
“Government is trying to improve education in so many ways. So, as the chief of the community I have put it onto myself to award the best students to motivate them and others to learn harder,” he said.
Following the end of term examination as an indicator, the best three performing pupils across all classes including junior high; first and first and second runners-up were rewarded with exercise books, pens and pencils by the chief for Okpper, Nene Teye Agor IV, as part of his contribution to improving the quality of education.
The schools that received the learning material were Ogome Anglican, St. Peter’s Roman Catholic, Dokuyo Municipal Assembly (MA) and Pleyo MA basic schools.
‘Poor’ classroom infrastructure is bedeviling teaching and learning in schools in Yilo Krobo, especially those in the rural areas of the municipality.
“When it comes to developmental project, I once had a tour around the communities and I found out that the pupils are sitting outside, while, some are also were sitting on a bamboo stick. The school buildings are not in a good state for studying,” the chief observed during his tour.
While he works at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Nene Teye Agor IV was named and enstooled chief for the people of Okper Divison – one of the then six divisions under the Yilo Krobo Traditional Area in January, 2021.
