NDC Targets 15 Seats In Eastern Region

The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to snatch eight parliamentary seats from the NPP to add to the seven the party currently has.

This will bring to 15, the total number of seats the NDC will have in the region after the 2016 parliamentary elections.

The NDC currently has seven seats out of the 33 in the region whilst the NPP has 22. Unsatisfied with this number, the NDC has embarked on a campaign to win more seats in the region come 2016. To this end, the Eastern Regional Secretariat of the party has mapped out a two-pronged strategy that groups all the parliamentary seats into two.

The seats the NDC seeks to snatch from the NPP include Asuogyaman, Ayensuano, Abetifi, Fanteakwa North, Abirim, Suhum, Akim Oda and Ofoase/Ayirebi.

Baba Jamal Kennoh, the Regional Communications Officer, disclosed this when addressing a press conference on Tuesday at the regional party office in Koforidua, where he announced that the official launch of their “Agenda 50/50″ had been scheduled for coming Saturday in Suhum.

According to Jamal Kennoh, the Eastern Region has never been and will never be the stronghold of the NPP.

“In 1992 and 1996, the NDC won the region with 57.26% and 53.80% respectively. We only lost the region to the NPP in the 2000 elections and have since not been able to get it back. But with the current crop of leaders from the branch, constituency and the regional levels, we are poised to achieve this common goal we share.

“When we say agenda 50% we do not mean we are sharing the percentage with the NPP but rather winning 50% of the votes for the rest of the political parties to share the remaining 50%. And we know the CPP, PNC, PPP and others will not allow the NPP to take the remaining 50%,” he said.

He added, ‘We know with the unprecedented development projects—both completed and ongoing—in the region, this agenda is achievable.”

He posited that the provision of water for Kyebi and its environs, the construction of roads, schools and hospitals across the region, among other things, were all good indicators of their success in 2016.

He was confident that what they had done in the region would help them achieve their 50% target to help the President win the presidential election come 2016 so as to continue the better Ghana agenda.

President John Mahama, it has been gathered, will be visiting the region tomorrow to inspect ongoing road projects in Kyebi, Suhum and Asamankese.
