Govt should take more serious interest in Agriculture- Mrs. Adongo
The program Director for the Peasant Farmer Association of Ghana, Miss Victoria Adongo has called on government to take a more serious interest in the agricultural sector, particularly the role played by women farmers.
Speaking to Rite FM News in an interview, Mrs. Adongo stressed that, Women play an important role in the agricultural value chain. Adding that, women are generally recognized as the main producers and processors of food for household consumption and also household income.
She noted that women’s ability to deal with these dynamics effectively and provide for the family’s needs is highly dependent on their access to, control over and ownership of productive resources particularly land.
According to her, women’s access and control over land has remained limited mainly due to unfavorable socio-cultural factors that underpin customary land arrangements. This coupled with the nature of social organization and community leadership, limits women’s participation in public discussion and decision making on land.
Mrs. Adongo therefore called on traditional rulers to release land for women farmers to control on it.
