The convention peoples party CPP has joined the chorus by some minority parties in the demand for a new and credible voters register by the electoral commission.
This follows calls from the largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party and its vice presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamudu Bawumia that the Ghanaian voters register lacks credibility. The NPP insists that voters’ registert is bloated with foreigners and insisting that the country needs a new voters’ register for credible, transparent and fair 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The call of the NPP has drawn in several political groupings such as the Let My Vote Count Alliance, LMVC, Alliance For Accountable Governance, AFAG, the National Democratic Party, NDP and now the Convention People’s Party, CPP, all joining the fray for the call for a new voters’ register.
In spite of this, Rite fm spoke to the Deputy Communications Director of the CPP; Mr. Asani Tano who stated that they are in favour of the call for a new Voters Register as they have formed a committee to present the necessary documents to the Electoral Commission indicating their support for a new and credible voters’ register.
He further stated that, they are not going on any demonstrations as other political parties have done with the regretful bloodshed and injuries but rather, submit their calls to the electoral commission. He did not mince words in condemning the organizers of the demonstration for not heeding the police guidelines which led to the brutalities.
He said that though their right to demonstrate cannot be taken from them, they should have heeded the police instructions which could have averted the nasty scenes.
Mr. Tano was however saddened by the brutalities meted out to the LMVC demonstrators by the police which he described as unconstitutional.
