“We Are Indebted To Generations To Come How We Won Against Covid-19” – Paramount Chief

The Paramount Chief for the people of Manya Krobo state says it’s a duty call on all and sundry inhabitant of the land how effective they come together to fight against the novel Covid-19 pandemic.

In an impassioned and inspiring address to Krobos at Odumase Krobo on Monday, Nene Sakite II, Konor of Manya Krobo State, called on all Krobos to pull together to effectively manage the current COVID-19 pandemic gripping Ghana. 

He appealed to Krobos for calm and asked them to fully cooperate with the government’s directives and abide by them. These include frequent hand washing, social distancing and staying at home. 

According to Nene Sakite, “This virus is vicious and deadly. I plead with you to exercise care and caution. This thing can kill you if you are not careful. I know it might be difficult to stay at home for weeks. However, if that is what it takes, we shall face it and succeed. Our Krobo spirit of determination, resilience and pulling together will serve us well. We are in peculiar times. I am confident that we will effectively fight together and defeat this pandemic”.

More than 30 of over 240 people had been confirmed for covid-19 in the Lower Manya Krobo district at a camp known as AFCON Camp B.

According to the Eastern Regional Health Directorate, there is no report of infection outside the quarantine camp.

Ghana has recorded a total of 566 Covid-19 cases with 8 deaths in 10 of the 16 regions. Greater Accra, Ashanti and Eastern regions have recorded the greatest cases of 452, 49 and 32 respectively.

Nene Sakite expressed his gratitude to all essential services – health and medical personnel, security, media, the two Assemblies: Lower and Upper Manya Krobo, volunteers and others “for your tremendous professionalism, dedication and sacrifice. Thanks so much. What you do will help us to get back to our normal lives in due course”.

Nene Sakite also announced that under his leadership, the Traditional Council has formed a COVID-19 Emergency Fund Committee to manage and coordinate human, medical, technical and material resources to support COVID-19 needs of Manya Krobo State. He further indicated that a full announcement with more details will be forthcoming in the next few days.

He reminded the people that “the Traditional Council will continue to provide strong leadership to Kroboland and to support the national agenda and all efforts to effectively fight COVID -19”.   

As part of internal measures to curb the spread of the pandemic, restrictions have been imposed on residents of the Lower Manya Krobo by the Municipal Assembly after COVID-19 cases were detected in its municipality.

In a statement signed and issued by the assembly emphasis saying only persons in the food value chain will be allowed at the Agormanya market.

“All non-food sellers…would not be allowed access to Agormanya market for the next two weeks starting from Saturday 11th April to 25th April 2020 subject to review. Abolo sellers at Kpong to be regulated to the minimal level and social distancing protocol should be strictly adhered to,” the statement added.

Children under 15 will also be banned from the markets while all drinking pubs in the municipality have also been ordered to close by 8:00 pm

Security checkpoints will also be mounted at all entry points to the municipality.
