Extension Director Condemns Use of DDT By Fisherman.
Director in charge of Extensions in the Lower Manya Krobo District, Mr. Philip Amoah has strongly condemned the resort to unorthodox means of fishing. Mr. Amoah cited the use of DDT and dynamites by fisher folk in Kpong and other fishing areas in Lower Manya whom he said were woefully guilty of the practice.
Mr. Amoah who was speaking on Rite Fm’s “Feed the future Platform” on Tuesday morning said fish farmers had indulged in this despicable habit for the past years in a bid to increase their fish harvest, something he said was dangerous to consumers of fish.
The use of dynamites is not only harmful to the health of the fish consuming public but has also been known to serve as dangerous to the Kpong water treatment as well as the Akosombo dam. He said the ministry of Food and Agric as well as the ministry of fisheries were now more determined than before to prosecute recalcitrant fishermen who still indulge in this despite several warnings.
He said the way forward for dealing with this is educating farmers on the dangers of using DDT and dynamites as well as urging fishermen to report culprit fishermen to the authorities for prompt action to be taken against them.
