I Started Bee-Keeping With My Old Chalk-Box

Bee-keeping has been identified as another source of animal farming in Ghana. Unfortunately, not many have seen the need in taking an alternative in this field. Mr. Newman, a bee farmer has been talking to Rite news about the values in bee-keeping and which many may not be aware of.

In a rather interesting revelation, Mr. Patrick Newman told the host of Tuesday’s ‘Feed the Future Platform’ under the Mobilizing Action Towards Agricultural Sector Improvement, MAASI, program of how he began bee-keeping with his old chalk-box. He explained that he had to resort to this because he was financially handicapped to begin a full-scale bee-keeping. The impressive outcome however encouraged others to offer him some financial assistance to start the bee-keeping as a full scale business.

Mr. Newman who is an agricultural consultant and a bee-keeping expert said he started his farming career with mushroom growing, snail keeping and grasscutter rearing.  He added that his choice of farming is very lucrative because everything that comes out from the box can be used for medicinal purposes because of the bees.

On the importance of bee-keeping, he elaborated a number of them including the bee wax used in the manufacturing of hair, candles, dumas among others, adding that ignorant and naïve farmers threw the box away when indeed they are good sources of money.
