Today marks a very significant and historic day in the lives of all Ghanaians, especially our farmers who work tirelessly to till our forest so that we can have food on our tables. According to our reporter, Nana Oboadee who has been in Bolgatanga since Sunday, farmers from various regions and districts have made themselves available to participate the great event which is intended to commend hardworking farmers.
The Agricultural sector with no doubt is the economic backbone of the country with cocoa, coffee, Shea butter and oil palm production amongst others employing many people in the country.
Nana reiterated that some farmers, who for their first time had visited the region, painstakingly find out where the Tono irrigation is sited, with others making their way to Paga where they could see crocodiles.
In a development, the farmers who knew the traditions of the country would not break rules but paid their respectful visit to the Bolgatanga house of Chiefs to officially announce their presence on the land of the Abudu”s and the Andani”s. Haven been welcomed to the region, the farmers were given two live cattle and two sheep as a symbol of acceptance of entry into the region.
Some farmers who spoke with Nana expressed that, their expectations were to receive tricycles popularly called “Aboboyaa” or Pick-ups to aid them in conveying laborers, farm inputs and farm produce to market centres, adding that it was costive to hire tricycles in the region.
Others who were into fish farming said they needed erectors, water pumps, fishing nets and pleaded with government and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for a reduction on feed products prices.
It is meanwhile reported that, Bolgatanga girls Senior High school which is venue for the event is very dusty comparing the organizers’ to provide the farmers with nose masks to avoid inhaling dust flying all over with the passage of people and vehicles.
