The New Patriotic Party (NPP) elder whose petition led to the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko claims he was scheming to keep the party in opposition.
According to Alhaji Sulemana Yirimea, the embattled chairman began to do the bidden of his ‘pay masters’ after the Tamale Congress in April 2014.
“Immediately Afoko became chairman, everything in the party begun to fall apart. The violence characterized our meetings were by his boys just to give the NPP a bad name,” he stated on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday.
Paul Afoko has been suspended indefinitely over act of misconduct deemed detrimental to the party’s victory in 2016.
The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) activated the suspension after the Chairman failed to answer to two petitions against him at the party’s Disciplinary Committee.
But Mr. Afoko maintained that he is still chairman because the NEC meeting is unconstitutional.
But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Alhaji Yirimea said the suspended chairman is the “Jonah in NPP ship”.
He explained that the only intent of Paul Afoko’s challenge of NEC’s decision is to divert the party’s attention on plans and strategies to win the 2016 elections.
Alhaji Yirimea noted that his petition against the National Chairman is not for personal vendetta but for the party’s interest.
“If one individual seems to rock the boat, it is better to remove that single person to allow the boat to sail smoothly to success,” the stressed.
The NPP founding member was convinced the brouhaha in the party said will not affect the electoral fortunes because “Paul Afoko is not the flagbearer”.
“Ghanaians are worried about the bad governance and the crippling economy and not Afoko’s troubles so they will vote massively for the NPP to improve their lives,” he added.
