The Speaker of Parliament has summoned the Local Government Minister Collins Dauda to explain to Parliament the reason for the ongoing demolition exercise that has led thousands of residents at Sodom and Gomorrah displaced.
The summon follows protests by the Deputy Minority Leader Dominic Nitiwul.
The Bimbilla Member of Parliament said the demolition exercise is a potential national security situation and must be addressed.
According to him, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly is executing the demolition exercise because the residents at Old Fadama popularly called Sodom and Gomorrah are weak and vulnerable.
Thousands of residents have been displaced following a demolition exercise undertaken, Saturday. The residents were accused of littering the already chocked Odaw river.
After the June 3 flood and fire disaster which claimed over 150 lives, the AMA began a chain of demolitions and has now gotten to the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah.
On Monday, the affected residents hit the street in violent protests threatening to occupy the State House. In the process innocent persons, passersby, police men were attacked by the rampaging residents.
Properties were also vandalised with the windscreens of cars completely shattered.
The protestors had to be dispersed with tear gas from a reinforced police personnel. Some 35 persons have since been arrested by the police.
The demolition and subsequent violent protestations were subject of discussion on the floor of Parliament, Tuesday.
Raising the matter on the floor of Parliament the Deputy Minority Leader believes the demolition was not properly thought through.
Joy FM’s Parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey reported the Bimbilla MP as saying the Local Government Minister Collins Dauda must be hauled before the house to explain the rationale for the demolition.
The Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee also expressed concern about the demolition, Brobbey reported.
The Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho directed that the Local Government minister must urgently appear before the House to offer an explannation.
It is likely he may appear tommorow, Brobbey hinted.
