Plantain Farmer Glorifies Lucrative Crop

A plantain farmer at Ogome, a suburb of Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region, Mr Addo Tetteh says he prefers plantain farming to any other types of cash crop farming due to its numerous advantages over other crops.

He said another secret cash machine that people tend to ignore is plantain farming which is very easy to cultivate and maintain unlike other cash crops that require so much time and money to maintain.

According to him, plantain farming is undoubtedly one of the most profitable agri-business ventures and also an important source of revenue for farmers who produce the crop in small scales.

Speaking in an interview with Prince Paul Amuzu, a broadcast journalist with Rite FM, the astute plantain farmer said that, annually, he makes a lot of money from the backyard plantain farm that he has.

His only challenge, he noted, is the destruction suffered by the plantain trees during heavy winds or storms when the crops are pulled down in the process, leaving them destroyed.

Plantain is a staple food of many tropical countries, and in Ghana, it is eaten in almost every home.

Because of the high demand for plantain in Ghana, it is a very good way of acquiring incomes.

It is a long-season crop which usually grows for more than 12 months, depending on the type.
