Angry commercial drivers, especially taxi drivers say they will continue with their strike if the police fail to release 26 of their members who were arrested on Monday.
Some drivers were arrested on Monday at Ashiaman for blocking some major roads during their strike to protest certain new licensing policies of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
According to the chairman of the Committed Drivers Association, Charles Mensah, “If they will not let us sleep, they’ll also not sleep. We’ll continue to strike for three days.”
Thousands of passengers were left stranded on June 1 as they struggled for commercial vehicles to convey them to their work places following the drivers’ industrial action.
The drivers say a directive from the DVLA for every commercial vehicle to have seatbelt installed in them is not feasible among other directives.
The arrested 26 are expected to be arraigned before court today.

Meanwhile, the Transport Minister Dzifa Atsivor has condemned the actions of the commercial bus drivers.
“In the first place, they didn’t even send their petition to us for us to even say we cannot do anything about it or we reject their proposal. You just get up one morning and cause a lot of disaffection to the traveling public. It is not right,” the minister said on Accra-based Citi FM.
“If they have their concerns, they should write to us at the Ministry, we will sit down and see how best we can meet them halfway but I am not happy they decided to take the law into their own hands,” she insisted.
