Agriculture Remains The Main Instrument For Economic Growth

Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture in charge of crops, honourable Yakubu Alhassan has noted that Agriculture remains the main instrument for economic growth and poverty reduction in Africa. Mr. Alhassan also noted that Agriculture remains the main instrument for economic growth and poverty reduction, adding that it continues to be dominated by the private sector.

Mr. Alhassan who was speaking at a workshop for the Ghana Non-State Actors on Tuesday in Accra as part of his keynote address emphasized that it was time to drive the expansion of the transformation of African agriculture.

This according to him is due to the fact that the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program, CAADP, recognizes the departure from this, leaving the small scale farmers to always carry the burden of agriculture. The implications he noted are that the small scale farmers remain a private unit since they take decisions only for their personal farms.

“We need to have African Agricultural value chains strengthened and energized for sustainable production system,” he emphasized. According to him, African agriculture is now about production for the market which is part of the entire value chain.

He called on the Non-State Actors and investors to take advantage of the current enabling environment to take African agro-business to higher heights.

The two day workshop for the Ghana Non-State Actors was aimed at sensitizing the Non-State Actors in Ghana to strategize on the status of the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP).
