Stone Weavil Is An Enemy To Mango Farmers

Mr. Jeremiah Nuertey, an Extension Officer in the Yilo Krobo Municipality who also doubles as a plant Doctor has advised mango farmers to beware of the ‘stone weevil’ because it’s an enemy to the mango farming.

In an interview with Mr. Jeremiah on Rite FM’s Kuapayo, he said the stone weevil is a very dangerous insect that affects mango farmers and which fight against must be given the utmost and urgent attention before it gets out of hand.

Mr. Jeremiah added that despite the harm that this insect causes to mangoes, it is also a quarantine pest which affects the exportation of mangoes to other countries and buyers always take caution before buying from affected farms.

Giving details concerning the activities of the insects, the extension officer said the stone weevil reduces yield and yield quality which results in difficulties pertaining to exportation. Other characteristics he mentioned include the fact that the weevils feed at night, are very destructive and very difficult to control.

Mr. Jeremiah added that stone weevils can be controlled through healthy farm sanitation practices which is making sure that the farm is very  clear which in turn enables the farmer to effectively apply chemicals to the affected plants.
