Dumso farmers kill 25 cattle over destruction of farms

Irate farmers at Dumso in the Kintampo South District in the Brong Ahafo Region yesterday killed 25 cattle and wounded six others for destroying their food and cash crops.

The incident comes on the heels of efforts by the police and authorities in the Ashanti Region to find a lasting solution to the tension between Fulani herdsmen and the people of the area over the destruction of crops and accusations of crimes such as murder and rape.

The police told the Daily Graphic in Sunyani that the Chief of Dumso, Nana Yaw Sarfo, provided a sanctuary to some Fulani herdsmen in the area.

Unfortunately, the herdsmen had for some time now been moving their cattle to various farms for pasture resulting in the destruction of crops.

Attack

According to the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Christopher Tawiah, it was these acts perpetrated by the Fulani herdsmen that might have compelled the farmers to mobilise themselves to attack the cattle.
He said the Fulani herdsmen reported the incident to the police and he gave an assurance that investigations were going on to arrest the perpetrators.

ASP Tawiah said those who would be arrested would be charged for causing harm and cruelty to animals.

Meanwhile, Nana Sarfo has been invited by the police for questioning while some policemen have been stationed in the town to ensure peace and tranquility.

According to ASP Tawiah, there was calm in the village notwithstanding the incident.
