Workshop On iLiNS Research Results Held In Accra

A workshop by the University of Ghana on the results dissemination of the International Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplement (iLiNS) project, yesterday came off at the Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra. The workshop which was held under the theme, “Dissemination of iLiNS Project Research Results” attracted stakeholders and players in the nutrition and maternity health industry and was geared towards sharing the findings from the research by the University of Ghana and the University of California, Davies, USA.

The research which was conducted on a number of married couples in the Yilo Krobo and Manya Krobo municipalities both in the Eastern region, was a drive to test the efficacy of micronutrient supplements made using vegetable oil, powdered milk, groundnut paste, sugar and micro nutrients in improving the nutrition and health of women during the first “1000 days,” that’s the period between conception, delivery and the first early years of the child.

Speaking to Rite news, Dr. Seth Adu of the Food Science department of the University of Ghana said one of the key functions of any university is to conduct researches, which is what the University of Ghana had done. He said it was important that they shared the results of the findings with the rest of the world which was exactly what they were doing.

According to him, the drive was in view of the low nutrient-based food given children in their early years, adding that the university was satisfied with the outcome of the positive outcomes of the research which indicated that children delivered by couples who took the products were outstanding.

Some couples on whom the research was conducted said they were satisfied with the effects of the product on their children. In an interview with a couple, Francis and Grace Kosi Tetteh, who were part of the research with Rite news, they expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the supplements while advising potential parents to take advantage of the supplement when it is made available.
