Waste Takes Over Nkurakan Market

By Saddath Asiamah

Despite occasional outbreaks of cholera and the devastating effects of loss of lives and on the economy, sections of the Ghanaian community continue to blatantly ignore those very human activities that serve as fertile grounds for such diseases. A classic example is the spate of uncollected rubbish noticeable across several communities.

One of such is the Nkurakan market in the Yilo Krobo constituency of the eastern region which has virtually been taken over by a heap of rubbish and waste products, a situation which is a recipe for cholera outbreak and other epidemics. In the midst of the filth, hundreds of traders do their daily businesses here to survive, take care of their children’s educational needs as well as meet other social responsibilities.

However, the mess in the market is hampering trading activities as the rubbish breeds mosquitoes, houseflies and other insects that promote diseases.

In an interview with some traders, they expressed to ritefmonline their dislike for the development and hoped that the district assembly act quickly to keep the market clean.

Madam Teiko Evelyn, the Assembly woman for the area in a reaction disclosed that apart from the market which has been taken over by waste materials, the public toilet sited close to the business enclave also stinks making the place an unbearable place  for trading activities.

The honorable assembly member also said that, an appeal has been made to the assembly to devise means to process the waste into fertilizer, as this will offer employment opportunities to most youth who after their secondary and tertiary education cannot lay hands on any jobs.

Madam Teiko also called on Zoomlion Ghana to be proactive in emptying the rubbish containers to reduce the risk of disease outbreak. She has advised inhabitants of the area to desist from indiscriminate disposal of waste, as this was the only sure way to make the people live in a clean and disease free environment.
