Vegetable Farmers Encouraged To Grow More Vegetables Despite Ban

By: Austin Ofori Addo

Mr. Seth Ayeh, a lecturer at the Presbyterian University College has encouraged vegetable farmers to continue to grow vegetables despite the ban on the produce in the European markets. The European Union (EU) ambassador to Ghana, William Hanna has hinted on plans by the EU to lift the ban placed on the export of some vegetable from Ghana last year because the produce did not meet the required quality standards.

Mr. Ayeh who was at a seminar organized by Agriseed Limited at Nsawam in the Eastern Region has therefore encouraged the vegetable farmers not to stop growing vegetables but they should instead make sure that they meet the required standards required by the EU.

‘The market is there, the consumers in Europe are very interested in Ghanaian produce but you have to get the quality right,’ Mr. Ayeh noted. According to him, one of the problems they encountered last year was that few vegetables were not meeting the right quality standards for the European markets adding that unfortunately, those produce had to be banned.

He however added that this did not mean that vegetable growers should stop growing vegetables adding, that farmers should always go by the good agricultural practices and this will help them produce quality vegetables. He said though there is a huge market in the EU for Ghanaian produce, the union will not compromise on quality standard.
