Use Of Chemicals By Farmers Is Hampering Our Work – GNATH

By: Austin Ofori Addo:

The Ghana National Association of Traditional Healers has revealed that the use of chemicals by farmers on their farms is posing a threat on their work, making it very difficult for them to execute their work effectively.

Speaking to Nana Baffour Adjei, Brong Ahafo Regional Vice Chairman of the association, he reminded Rite news of how farmers in the not too distant future used the traditional cutlass and hoe in cultivating their farms, something that has now given way to the use of chemicals.

According to Nana Baffour, the use of the chemicals meant that the leaves were no longer safe for the preparation of herbal medications while in other instances the leaves were not available as a result of being killed by the chemicals.

He pointed out that that was not all as farmers now even resort to the application of chemicals on plants at the back of their houses which turn to affect animals that feed on those plants. He said herbalists were also victims because preparations from those plants are poisonous as a result of the chemicals being sprayed on them.

Nana Baffour therefore announced that they will prepare and present their grievances to parliament in other to enact laws that will regulate the activities of the farmers as far as chemical application on farms are concerned.

In the end, he called for an action against deforestation which he said was also a key factor that the authorities must look at since all herbalists depend on plants.
