Upper Manya Krobo Celebrates Farmers’ Day

Fifty-six-year-old Daniel Sodji was on Friday awarded the overall best district farmer for the Upper Manya Krobo District in the Eastern region at the just ended 31st National Farmers and Fishermen Day Celebrations. The venue was Sisiaman Yiti near Asesewa under the nationwide theme of ‘’Transforming Ghana, Invest in Agriculture.’’

Mr. Sodji who has been farming for the past 20 years cultivated 40 acres of maize, 10 acres of groundnut, 4 acres of pepper, 176 cattle, 60 sheep and 20 goats. He has three permanent workers, 10 casual workers as well as five vehicles to compliment his work.

For his package, Mr. Sordji went home with a certificate, a motorbike, a packet of iron sheets, cutlasses, a pair of wellington boots, Knapsack sprayer, and full pieces of wax print among other items.

Mr. Daniel Sodji in an interview with ritefmonline said he was happy for his recognition as the overall winner of the district best farmer and has expressed gratitude to the government for awarding him the ultimate prize. He explained that the major challenge confronting them is the poor nature of roads connecting the farming communities and market centers which he said is contributing to post harvest losses and there fore called on government to construct the road to ease transportation of food stuffs.

The District Chief Executive, (DCE) Hon. Joseph Agmor Tetteh speaking at the event assured the farmers in the district of government’s continuous support, adding that assembly was working hard to improve the road systems in the farming communities.

Meanwhile the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Jeff Tetteh Kavienu who also supported the celebration with some items congratulated the farmers for their hard work, stating that through his effort the Chinese Embassy has agreed to support the farmers with the construction of irrigation dams to help them have access to water for watering their crops.
