Upper Manya Farmers Threaten Mayhem on Fulani Herdsmen

The Dadematse (divisional chief) of Brepong, a farming community in the Upper Manya Krobo district of the Eastern region has sent a strong caution to security authorities to either take a decisive step in curbing the rampant invasion by Fulani herdsmen in the community or they vent their wrath on the herdsmen themselves.

Mr. Kwame Asare, the Dadematse who doubles as the Assemblyman for Brepong Lower and who was speaking in an interview with Rite news over the weekend expressed frustration with the Upper Manya Police command for failing to confront the problem of the nomads who have turned their farms into grazing grounds for their cattle.

‘Cassava Farmers are having their farmlands destroyed…maize farmers are falling victims and all attempts to get the herdsmen to reason with us have fallen on deaf ears,’ he complained bitterly to Rite news during an interaction at the Asesewa market.

The Dadematse who attributed the high cost of foodstuffs in the district to the wanton destruction said they would take the law into their hands if the situation persists.

According to reports, many farming communities in the Upper Manya Krobo district of the Eastern region are likely to be hit with severe famine following the destruction of several acres of farms by cattle of nomadic herdsmen. Hunger scare has already engulfed the communities as they struggle to get food to eat whiles others are indebted to their creditors who provided loans for them to plough their lands.

Communities such as Anyaboni resettlement area, Aframase ,Akateng, Poliwa, Terguanya and other farming communities in the district have been affected by the activities of the Fulani herdsmen creating fear of food insecurity hence a call on NADMO and other security agencies to come to their aid.

Peasant farmers in these communities affected by the destructive activities have complained that large acres of cassava, maize, groundnut, pepper, beans and okro farms have been pastured by cattle of the nomadic herdsmen.

The crops were in harvesting stages when they were prematurely pastured by the cattle. The farmers mostly single mothers and widows lament that the destruction of their farm lands will inflict hardship and hunger on their families as the farms are their sources of livelihood with some of the farmers lamenting that their children may stay home because they have no money to pay their fees.
