Two Nigerians arrested with Indian hemp

Two Nigerians have been arrested in two different locations in Accra for allegedly attempting to transport parcels of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp to Cote d’Ivoire and an unknown location.

The suspects were identified as Chuku Nwube Ebuka, 34, a sales assistant and Keji Omotosho, 20, unemployed.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Deputy Accra Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Timothy Y. Bonga, said at midnight on October 28, the police received information about the attempt to transport substances suspected to be narcotics from Arena and Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

He said police personnel were dispatched to the scene and at Arena, Ebuka was arrested with a big black plastic bag.

When the bag was searched, Mr Bonga said the police found 17 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Upon interrogation, he said Ebuka claimed ownership of the content of the bag and told the police that he was sending them to Cote d’Ivoire.

Though Ebuku could not tell his source of the substance, the police said they would continue with their investigation and process the suspect for court.

Second suspect

In the case of Omotsoho, Mr Bonga said a man who saw the suspect carrying two bags became suspicious after observing his demeanour while he(suspect) was trying to board a commercial vehicle, which was heading for Accra.

He said the complainant approached the suspect who was not ready to disclose the content of the bag and forcibly opened one of the bags.

When the bag was opened, Mr Bonga said the compressed slabs of the dried leaves started falling to the surprise of others who had been attracted to the scene.

There were six slabs of the compressed dried leaves in the bag.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and escorted to the Regional Police headquarters with the suspected narcotics.
