Tuobodom Tomato Farmers Record Low Sales…Despite Bumber Harvest

BY: Austin ofori Addo

Tomato farmers at Tuobodom in the Brong Ahafo region are at their wits end following poor sales for their tomato produce. This is despite the fact that they have cultivated the tomatoes in large quantities but market women are not patronizing their stuff which has resulted in the produce rotting on the farms.

Speaking in an interview with the 2009 national best tomatoes farmer, Mr. Adjei Fosu Seth on Rite news, he confirmed the plight of the farmers. According to him, patronage of the tomatoes was low despite the fact that the price had been reduced from four hundred Ghana cedis to one hundred and forty Ghana cedis.

One of the reasons Mr. Fosu said the market women attributed to their lack of interest was that tomatoes from Ghana rot very quick as compared to that from Burkina Faso.

The tomato best farmer also noted that that was the tomato season which sees a lot of farmers going into tomato cultivation, a situation which partly accounts for the current challenges.

He suggested that it was about time that the Crop Research Institute brought new variety of tomatoes that can match the quality of that coming from Burkina Faso in order to minimize the rate of tomato import.
