By: Nana Ama Sarfo

The human body needs good cholesterol to function effectively; this is according to Mr. Emmanuel Sackey, a nutritionist at Upper Manya Krobo in the Eastern region. Mr. Sackey who stated this when he appeared as guest on the Food Safety, Nutrition and Hygiene show added that cholesterol which can also be referred to as Oil or Fat, is found in all cells of the body and it is vital for the normal functioning of the body.

Mr. Sackey who disputed the perception that cholesterol is only associated with fat people noted that cholesterol can be found in everybody, no matter your body size.

‘Cholesterol is not found in only fat or obese people but is also found in people of all sizes; slim, tall, young and old,’ the nutritionist explained.

He mentioned that there are the good and bad types of cholesterol. He however noted that the body only needs and depends on the good cholesterol while the bad cholesterol is bad for the body,.

He continued that after eating food that contains oil, the body takes a portion of the good cholesterol together with the bad cholesterol. The bad cholesterol meanwhile does not melt and can be found through the veins which the blood passes through.

‘Eating too much of bad cholesterol can cause hypertension and Ghanaians must avoid consuming too much of oily foods and also a lot of meat,’ Mr. Sackey told host Nana Ama Sarfo.
