Tomato Shortage Still A Major Concern

Ahiador Catherine:

This year’s poor climate change is a cause of low cassava production which has become a problem all over the country. Tomatoes which is a fruit vegetable has also been very scarce in the country as a result of the poor downpour of rain.

In this regard, Mr. Adusei Mensah who is the 2010 best tomato farmer in the Brong Ahafo region has demonstrated his concern that tomato has not come in abundance this year. ‘When you visit areas like Begoro in the Eastern region and Tuobodom in the Brong Ahafo region, you can get enough tomatoes there but it’s not enough which is why our market women go to Burkina Faso to buy their tomato,’ Mr. Adusei observed.

He however admitted that it would be a lie on his side if he should say the tomato is in abundance in the country, despite the supply from neighbouring Burkina Faso.

But even in the face of the tomato scarcity, Mr. Adusei was worried about the lack of storage facilities for tomato farmers in times of abundance. He stated that when you survey Ghana now, the youth are more into tomato farming but if the government does not provide storage facilities for them they will have no option but leave the sector.
