Thunder Strike Silences Rite FM

A series of ravaging thunder strikes on Monday afternoon that rocked Somanya and its environs have ‘silenced’ Rite FM for the last three days bringing all commercial activities of the station to a halt. The incident which occurred on Monday the 6th of March, 2017 during a heavy downpour, has resulted in the destruction of many equipment and gadgets.

Head of Technical department at Rite FM explained to ritefmonline.org that the force of the strike was beyond the precautionary measures put in place to safeguard the effects of such incidents and which therefore resulted in the various damages to the equipment.

‘On Monday afternoon, some equipment of the station were destroyed following a thunder strike during the rains and this has resulted in the shutting down of the station to allow for repair works,’ Mr. Yaw Boadi who is the head of the station’s technical operations told this reporter.

Power supply to the station was disrupted until Tuesday morning as a result of damage to the station’s main meter which was subsequently replaced by the Electricity Company of Ghana. Though power has been restored, the station still has to contend with the challenge of repairing its several operating machines which were either totally destroyed or partly damaged.

Even though the station is currently on-air playing music, the situation has resulted in the disruption of the programmes ran by the station, a development that has left anxious listeners in uncertainty.  The company’s telephone lines have been inundated with anxious callers quizzing to know what was happening at the station and for how long the situation was bound to persist.

Some of the equipment Mr. Boadi mentioned as affected by the thunder includes, the station’s transmitter, two sound processors (digital and manual), a thunder arrestor, recording and playing PCs and a link transmitter surge protector. Others gadgets that were damaged include two air-conditioners, two radio sets and two decoders.

Rite FM was not the only victims of last Monday’s rains. Several residents within Somanya and its environs have reportedly been left with damaged equipment and gadgets. Such personal effects as television sets, sound systems, decoders among others were damaged by the thunder strikes.

Full operations of the radio station are however expected to resume in the coming days.
