The Call For Farmers Insurance Is Long Overdue – SEND Ghana

By; Austin Ofori Addo

Senior Project Officer in charge of Agriculture, Trade and Livelihood of Send Ghana, Nana Aisha Mohammed has added her voice to the call on farmers to involve themselves in insurance policies.

According to her, the call by the Agric Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna is long overdue. She was of the view that there are many factors that can prevent the farmers from achieving the ultimate bumper harvest which include, the climate change, post-harvest losses and even general policies in the country which also affect the farmers and their produce that is what is driving the insurance companies away.

She stated that it should be the country’s policy that any insurance company should have specific design project that will target farmers since the track record of the farmers in terms of banking is not good and farmers are not able to pay loans from their banks for their farming activities which is why they are calling for the insurance.

Nana Aisha further stated that the farmers will need specific product from the insurance companies which include the climate related policies, post-harvest policies, loan related policies among others which leaves the farmers to make a choice as to which product to buy.

She further asserted that government should put in place policies that will protect its interest because most insurance companies do not pay where there is default.

Citing an example, she said a country like America has insurance that covers bumper harvest because one will not be able to sell and get the price needed.
