The battle between Fulani Herdsmen, crop farmers; 9 killed again

The conflict between nomadic Fulani herdsmen and crop farmers has been an “epidemic” in the country claiming many lives. Latest report available to Rite FM indicates that 9 lives, 7 Fulani herdsmen and 2 Kwahu residents were killed in a battle 26 October, 2017.

Government has established Ranching Project Committee to put mechanisms in place to curtail the menace of the persistent conflict between the Fulani herdsmen and crop farmers across the country. The Committee has been tasked among other duties to look for amicable solutions to the development which have been with the country for long by preparing sites for pastures so that cattle farmers can feed their livestock and even constructing roads for the transportation of their livestock.

In an interview with Prince Paul Amuzu of Rite FM yesterday, the Chairman of the Cattle Ranching Project Committee, Dr. Kwame Opong Anane said the Committee upon its formation has been working with the various stakeholders as far as the situation is concerned to find holistic and amicable solutions.

“The Committee is formed by the Ministry of Food and Agricultural with the collaboration of the National Security. The Committee is tasked to look for lands which can be used for pastures for grazing including water and accommodation to the Fulani herdsmen within and outside Ghana, who brings their cattle from other countries during dry season to feed them, brain storm appropriate means of transporting into the country without destroying people’s crops. We are working hard to achieves all these dreams to curtail the situation” he has said

Crop farmers keep accusing Fulani herdsmen of destroying their crops in the course of feeding their livestock.

Two divides of these conflicts equip themselves with sophisticated weapons as they go about their farming activities. They attack each other with these weapons at the least of provocation.
