Shoprite sales driven by non-South Africa operations

Shoprite has announced turnover rose by ‘about’ 12.5% to ZAR57.5 billion (US$5.0 billion) during the six months to December 2014, with like-for-like growth coming in at 5.1%. The retailer said that sales through its supermarkets in South Africa rose by 12.0%, aided by average internal inflation of 5.2% and strong sales growth in December, when they rose by 13.0%.

Outside of its home market Shoprite said that sales rose by 15.0% – 15.4% at constant currencies – with its performance negatively affected by the sale of its business in Tanzania and the temporary closure of a store in Angola in July 2014 due to a fire. Finally the retailer reported that its furniture division saw sales grow by 12.2%, driven by its OK Furniture brand.
