Several Injured In Akorley Accident

Nineteen passengers escaped death on Friday when a sprinter bus on which they were travelling from Accra towards Somanya was involved in a deadly accident at Akorley near Somanya in the Eastern region. The driver of the vehicle was said to have lost control of the vehicle after a tyre burst which consequently veered off the road and somersaulted before landing on its side.

The accident which happened at about 1:20pm has left the passengers with serious injuries with some of them in critical conditions. Two of them who are women reportedly suffered severe head injuries.

Host of Rite FM’s Morning Ride, Krobea Asante who visited the scene of the accident described it as horrendous. ‘I saw the remnants of human hair scattered around the scene…it was a scary site,’ he recounted.

Eyewitnesses who blamed the accident on speeding on the part of the driver told Rite news that the said vehicle, a Sprinter Benz bus with registration number GT 5819-16 was heading towards Somanya from Accra when upon reaching a spot at Akorley, about 30 meters from the Akorley Pack House, burst a tyre. This resulted in the driver losing control of the steering wheel resulting in the vehicle veering off the road.

The driver of the bus was said to have absconded from the scene after the incident occurred.

Somanya Police Commander, Isaac Otsin confirmed the accident to Rite news and indicated that some of his men had been dispatched to the scene. The injured, he added had been rushed to the Atua Government Hospital for treatment.

The vehicle was said to be carrying drinks, fruits and other food stuffs at the time of the accident.
