Several Factors Account for Post-harvest losses  – Nana Obeng Nuako III

The second (2nd) National Best Farmer for the year 2014, has revealed that, there are a lot of factors that account for post-harvest loses which farmers must know.

According to Nana Obeng Miako the III, in Ghana, farming activities depend on the weather especially during the rainy season so when it fails to rain, farmers who have cultivated their crops run at a loss.

Nana Obeng Nuako added that, because they may be in the rainy season in a particular year, most farmers cultivates almost the same crops such as pepper, onion, tomatoes and the like.  This leads to bumper harvest therefore making market for the products becomes a problem.

Speaking  on “Akuafo Si Sen”, a segment on the morning show, Nana Obeng Nuako also revealed that, even though, it rained for them to have their harvest, the rains mostly destroy the roads from their farms to the market which also makes transporting of the goods from the farm to the market very difficult.

On this the subcommittee chairman for Ghana national association for farmers and fishermen Mr. E.T Mensah also revealed that, there are two types of post-harvest loses.

According to Mr. E.T Mensah, there are other things which we need to put in place before cultivating, but we do not do it.

Mr. E.T Mensah emphasized that, the government should have a planning committee to share all the sectors. He revealed this on Agric forum on last Saturday.
