Security expert calls for emergency meeting between NPP and IGP,

A security expert with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre is calling for an emergency meeting between the IGP and senior members of the opposition party to allay any form of suspicion simmering between the two parties.

Dr Kwasi Aning believes if anything untoward happens to the leader of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo it may well be a problem for the security agencies and the country at large. He would rather the two parties meet to resolve mutual suspicion than have the media war which appears to be rearing its ugly head.

His comments come in the wake of allegations by the NPP that the John Mahama led government is scheming to put the leader of the opposition NPP in harms’ way.

This week tension between the NPP and national security has risen to a crescendo following the arrest of three South African security experts brought in by the NPP to train the security detail of the NPP flagbearer on how to handle VIP.

The three have been charged and detained despite a circuit ruling to have the suspects admitted to bail.

The Acting National Chairman of the NPP, Freddie Blay, at a news conference Thursday said that “some attack on our presidential candidate and his vice” is imminent. “If we are not careful it will happen,” he said without disclosing the source of his intelligence information.

He said the party will take all the necessary means possible to protect its flagbearer ahead of the crucial 2016 election in November.

Reacting to the allegation of the NPP, the security expert Dr Kwasi Aning said he does not buy the allegation of the NPP, not because it is not possible, but the sequence of communication messages surrounding the arrest of the three South Africans has been confusing and contradictory.

He said he has heard about nine different explanations for the NPP invitation of the South Africans and that is not good enough.

He was however convinced that “Akufo-Addo is central to the stability and respect Ghana has” and “if there is threat to his person and running mate, the first port of call is the security services.”

He said when the argument of the NPP is subjected to further scrutiny, the only conclusion that can be drawn is one of institutional mistrust and steps must be taken to resolve that.
