Agricultural consultant, Shakesphere Djokoto in an interview on Rite Fm’s morning ride said the Agricultural sector is collapsing irrespective of the importance of Agricultural production in the country. He indicated that Agriculture which is the driving force and pillar of the country has been neglected the due attention it deserves by the appropriate authorities.
He observed that the poor road network has affect Agricultural production as it makes it complicated for farmers in various communities to transport their produce from the farm to the market centers. He also added that most farming communities lack the necessary utilities such as water supply, hospital and other farm input needed to boost Agriculture production in the country
Also no subsidy is added to Agricultural input making the agric system more complicated as the cost of agricultural input keeps raising. He also noted that the negligence by authorities in the various districts and the country as a whole is collapsing the Agricultural sector.
Not only the negligence by the authorities affect the Agricultural sector but small amount of government revenue is allocated to the agric sector making it difficult for the sector to improve. He further added that the district assembly and the department of agric should come together and work towards the improvement of agriculture in the district.
Also the district assembly must fall on Non- governmental Organizations who are Agric Oriented to invest or finance their project. Precisely, he said Ghana is blessed with a lot of natural resource but lacks the necessary human resources to fully exploit such resources. He therefore advised the appropriate authorities to pay attention to the Agric sector in order to prevent food shortage in the near future.
