Rice Farmers Worried Over Low Demands For Local Rice

Rice farmers at Asutsuare in the Shai Osudoku District in the Greater Accra Region have expressed worry over the low patronage of the locally produced rice in the country. According to them they recorded low sales on the Ghanaian market every year.

In an exclusive interview with Rite news, Mr Gideon Matey one of the farmers said the importation of foreign rice has resulted in a sharp decline in the patronage of their products since the imported rice comes cheaper which serves as a bait to lure local consumers into patronizing them.

He discounted the claim that locally manufactured rice was on inferior to their foreign counterparts and further stated that there was quality locally produced rice like paddy rice, sweet mommy rice and others on the market. He however said competition with the foreign brands results with the local rice recording low sales.

Mr Martey therefore urged Ghanaians to consume the local rice because they are more nutritious, adding that research has testified that the local rice is better than the imported ones.
