Rice Farmers Go Wild Over Sale Of Water Pond

Rice farmers in Asutsuare in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region are calling on the government to urgently come to their aid as some foreigners are encroaching on their irrigation lands.

According to them, the only pond serving the over 3000 hectors of rice farms has been sold to a Chinese company by name SGGA to be used as a fish pond instead of its intended use as an irrigation facility.

Speaking to Rite news in an interview, he explained that the pond was constructed in 1997 by the government which currently serves close to 3000 rice farmers.  He said irrespective of the fact that its supply of water to the farmers is not enough, a situation which is well known to the irrigation authorities, the authorities notwithstanding still ignored this and went ahead to release the pond to the Chinese to be used for fish rearing.

The farmers are therefore calling on the government to stop the foreigners from using the pond meant for irrigation for fish farming, failure to do this which could result in they taking the law into their own hands
