Report Network Problems To NCA

Mawuko Zormelo, deputy director for consumer and corporate affairs for the National Communications Authority has strongly advised both subscribers of voice and data services and their service providers which are the telecommunication companies, to report any issues of network problems to the outfit for a speedy and prompt resolution. He stressed that the telecommunication companies are also in active business because of their consumers and would suffer investment losses if people did not patronize them.

Mawuko Zormelo made these remarks in an interview with Owuraku Asamoah, programs manager of Rite Fm during an interaction with him at a consumers’ forum held at Somanya on Friday. The deputy director said the NCA; with the core mandate to mediate between subscribers and the service providers was decentralization its operations with the opening of eight regional offices to effectively deal with consumer concerns. He said these new offices would be centers available for subscribers with network challenges to report such difficulties.

He said subscriber base for voice call in Ghana is currently 32 million and that the NCA was going round the country checking data capacity of the network providers and that the three northern regions have already been covered in that exercise.

He was of the view that for the much anticipated e-commerce and e-governance to be achieved in the 21st century, the country needs strong and good internet to achieve this. He said most people now relied on the internet for their businesses and day to day activities which is why its services must be improved.

Mawuko said he was aware that all is not well with network service delivery and that they were in constant touch with the network providers to improve upon their services. He said he was of the hope that data or internet penetration would hit the 52% mark by 2016 which is why fiber optic connections have been done from the southern part of the country through to the northern part as well as back to the south.

He said their biggest challenge is how to ensure the profitable use of data bundles and those are the projections of the NCA. He said the Authority cannot do all in one breath and that currently; licenses have been issued for the providers to migrate from 3G to 4G internet services.

He stressed the fact that consumers have the right to demand for value for money and that his outfit was currently working to ensure that consumers receive value for money.
