Regulate the Release of Carbon Dioxide – Climate Expert

A climate expert at the Center for Climate Change and Food Security, Mr. Mahamudu Mohammed Nurudeen has cautioned Ghanaians to regulate the rate of releasing Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere.

Mr. Nurudeen made the assertion in an interview with Rite News. He explained that, the change of climate that is affecting farmers now is as a result of the depletion of atmospheric pressure that will contribute to Ghana’s rainfall pattern.

He wondered for instance why many families commuted in different vehicles when they can do so in one vehicle to prevent the pollution of the environment.

“Most Ghanaian families want to drive in their luxurious cars whiles the whole family can use just one vehicle which invariably results in the release of fumes into the environment,” Mr. Mahamudu observed.

He also cautioned against food wastage which he equally attributed to climate change. He said that rotten foods give out bad scents which also affects climate.

The climate expert was also emphatic that contrary to popular belief, climate change doesn’t only affect particular crops but ‘all crops in the agriculture sector.’

“Climate change doesn’t only affect cocoa but all crops in the agricultural sector. During droughts, a lot of pests and diseases breed which affects crops and humans which makes the environment unhygienic for all living things,” he cautioned.

He stressed that it will be suitable if Ghanaian farmers grow more hybrid seeds that can withstand all forms of climatic conditions and produce more food to feed the industries.

Mr. Mahamudu expressed fears in a potential drop in cocoa production in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire, a situation he attributed to the continuous drought.

“Cocoa production in Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire is likely to decrease due to continuous drought if appropriate measures are not put in place to address the situation,” he said.

He emphasized that any decrease in Ghana’s production will have a greater impact on foreign exchange since it is a cash crop commodity that earns a lot of foreign revenue for the Ghanaian economy.

The expert therefore entreated everyone to avoid all these acts to help save the environment.
