Regional Executives Should Be Blamed For President’s ‘No’ Votes

By Saddath Asiamah

Constituency executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress, NDC at the Lower Manya Krobo constituency in the eastern region have held a press conference at the party’s constituency office to respond to some developments in events leading up to and during the NDC’s nationwide parliamentary elections. The press conference was addressed by the constituency chairman of the party in the person of David Walter Humenu, party secretary, Fredrick Antenas Kofi, youth organizer Mr. David Kwame Tetteh and women organizer, Madam Esther together with a number of their deputies.

The event which was scheduled to take off at 11:00 am, eventually got off at 2: 50pm. The aim of the press conference according to organizers was to address what they called the unbelievably high number of ‘No’ votes registered against the president in the November 21st nationwide polls. He said this was no proof of the inefficiency of either the aspirants or constituency executives but the blame should squarely be laid at the feet of the regional executives who failed the several issues they raised with the register which they failed to address.

David Walter stated unequivocally that the voters’ register was heavily compromised by many names that they presumed were members of the opposition New Patriotic Party. He lamented that true and recognized members of the parties could not found their names on the voters register, resulting in they losing their franchise which added to the high percentage of ‘no’ votes recorded against the president. He also attributed the high ‘no’ votes to low education of the electorate as to how to correctly vote for the president. He added that the candidates did not make educating voters on how to vote for the president during their campaign a priority since the president was going unopposed.

Mr. Omenu doubted if any member of the party would oppose the president’s second term bid, adding that ‘no true member of the National Democratic Congress of the Lower Manya constituency will vote against the president.’ He alleged that some aspirants registered some NPP members in their homes who then had the opportunity to vote which contributed to the increase in the number of ‘NO’ votes.

He further added that the total number of votes the president garnered at the constituency was 6138 which is 87.2 percent when their target was at least 99 percent.

He has therefore called on the government to implore the security apparatus to really investigate what happened in Lower Manya.
