Quantify Planting for Food and Jobs Policy - SEND Ghana

By Prince Paul Amuzu:

SEND GHANA, a civil society organization has appealed to the government to disclose the cost of the implementation of its ‘Planting for Food and Jobs' initiative in the agricultural sector.

Speaking at a civil society forum on the 2017 Budget Statement and Economic Policy on Monday in Accra themed ‘'Sowing the seeds for growth and jobs'', the organization said the policy which is expected to led to the provision of 750,000 jobs has the potential of absorbing the teeming unemployed youth as well as increase productivity, food security and nutrition. The group said it is a step in the right direction and its cost must be disclosed.

According to the Country Director for SEND GHAHA, Mr. George Osei-Bimpeh who made the presentation at the forum, government‘s one district one factory policy should prioritize agro-industries because they have latent potential of generating employment and income opportunities.

‘Government should increase its core funding for the sector and resist the temptation to resort to ABFA as a substitute in recent years for funding the ministry's capital expenditure,' he said.

He has therefore also urged the government to disburse the subsidized fertilizer in time as the farming season approaches.

‘Government should ensure that subsidized fertilizer is disbursed in a timely fashion as the farming season is fast approaching and in actual and right quantities as projected. Government should also put in measures to curb the smuggling of fertilizer to neighboring countries,' he added.
