Presby moderator slams EC boss

Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Professor Emmanuel Martey, has cautioned the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, to conduct due diligence before accepting any members of the Election Steering Committee.

His comments follow intense pressure on the EC to drop some members of the National Election Steering Committee.

Some pro-opposition groups, Let My Vote Count and Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) want Joseph Whittal, Deputy Commissioner at CHRAJ, Dr. Karl Max Arhin, a Deputy Director of International Affairs of the NDC and Francis Azumah of the National Peace Council removed from the committee because they are known NDC activists.

Commenting on this development, the Moderator charged the EC Chair to work to reduce the mistakes in the electoral process.

“The chairperson of the Electoral Commission presently makes too many mistakes, and I hope that she will minimize her mistakes. She also talks too much.”

According to Prof. Martey, Charlotte Osei “must work behind the scenes, she must not come and answer all queries; she should really minimize her mistakes. This is very important.”

He further chided the Commission for not investigating the background of the members of the committee before appointing them.

“You cannot appoint a committee without a thorough search on their background,” he added.

The Presby Moderator observed that “what is happening now when we are far from the election, should this continue, if we do not take care, I don’t want to be a prophet of doom but things will be worse than they were four years ago.
