POULTRY FARMERS CAUTIONED OVER BIRD FLU

Veterinary officers in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality have warned poultry farmers in the area to be more careful about the bird flu disease which has become a nationwide problem to the poultry farmers. This forum was organized by Dr. Asiedu Baah the Municipal Veterinary doctor

The aim for organizing this was to educate the farmers about what bird flu is, its mode of transmission, symptoms and control measures. According to Dr. Asiedu Baah, three regions named Ashanti, Volta and Greater Accra have been affected by the disease.

He noted that before June, fourteen (14) outbreak sites were discovered resulting in about 51,266 being affected by the disease. This resulted in the death of 14,742 and a further 36524 being destroyed to curtail the further spread of the bird flu. Also, about 1092 of crates of eggs were also destroyed, all of these without any compensation to affected farmers.

He went on to educate participants about the differences between the bird flu and the New castle diseases, citing that there are similarities though, and adding that they should not confuse the two diseases.

He noted that the mode of transmission is through infected poultry and other migratory birds. In addition he warned farmers to take Biosecurity measures such as providing good fencing, screen off stray birds and provide foot bath with veridical disinfectants.

He later advised the farmers to report any occurrences in their farms to veterinary officers for prevention and immediate control measures.
