Postponed assembly election, a blow to assemblies proper functioning-Dr. James Awaitey

The associate director of Center for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) Dr. James Awaitey has stated on Rite FM’s “Morning Show” program that postponement of the district assembly elections would have a blow on the proper functioning of the assembly because the district assembly is the highest political authority in the district and has deliberative and executive functions.

“It is not an interesting news to hear the assembly elections postponed because a lot of issues are done at the local level thus it would have a blow on the proper functioning of the various assemblies” Dr. James Awaitey said.

He explained that, looking at the functions at the assembly level, it cannot function effectively without assembly members because it will create a vacuum and some functions if possible may be delegated to the chief executive and the coordinating director who may not perform fully the job needed to be performed by the assembly members.

Dr. James Awaitey doubted if the chief executive and the coordinating director are going to take firm and transparent decisions when it comes to financial matters where the assembly would have to take a decision and the implementation of medium-term development plan (MTDP).
